Characterization of summer mortalities of C. gigas oyster in France in relation to environmental parameters ArchiMer

Field characterization of summer mortality was performed in France in the frame of the Morest project. Natural and hatchery spat were compared between three oyster production areas in France. Regardless of the natural or hatchery origin, oysters died during the reproduction period after temperature reaches 19 degree C. Thus, in southern areas, temperature accelerated gametogenesis of small spat (10mm) as well as adults, and mortality appeared for the two age classes. In contrast, sexual maturation proceeded more slowly in northern where spat mortality was lower compared to 18 months old oysters. Effects of age and environment on the summer mortality in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas during the first two years ArchiMer

Three successive generations were produced between 2001 and 2003 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for survival in juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas. For each generation, two groups were selected for their high ("R" for resistant) and low ("S" for susceptible) survival. Significant differences in mortality were observed during the first year in Riviere d'Auray (RA) (Brittany-France). However, low and similar mortality were observed for both groups, with no significant difference between groups in the first and second generation in this site, where the first summer is the critical, sensitive period with a clear age effect. La merluza (Merluccius hubbsi) es el más importante de los recursos pesqueros del Océano Atrántico Sudoccidental, y se distribuye desde la latitud 25º 00'S (Cabo Frío, Brasil) hasta más al sur de la latitud 48º 00'S (Plataforma patagónica, Argentina). Dentro de su área de distribución, realiza migraciones estacionales a lo largo de un ciclo anual de carácter trófico - reproductivo, directamente influenciadas por la cirulación hidrográfica de la Corriente de Malvinas. Las especies alimento de la merluza se hallan distribuidas en su mayoría en la columna de agua, resultando así, que el alimento proviene casi en su totalidad de las comunidades pelágica y demersal - pelágica, lo que induce a calificar a la merluza como una especie con hábitos de predación...

The problem of the clogging up of sea water pipes by Mytilus edulis larvae is a very real problem. A study has been made of the ways to destroy these larvae, (1) by electricity (publication in preparation), (2) by ultrasound. This last technique has given interesting data, but exploitation of results on a large scale presents many difficulties. An interesting general phenomenon is to be underlined. For ultrasound treatments of short duration (10s), many larvae are simply stressed and recover later on. For longer treatments, there is actual dislocation of the larvae and instant mortality, this mortality increases with time.

Lluvia de semillas y emergencia de plántulas de Pinus patula Schl. et Cham. en Zacualtipán, Hidalgo. Colegio de Postgraduados

La presente investigación es un aporte para entender el comportamiento de la repoblación de Pinus patula Schl. et Cham. en el ejido La Mojonera, Zacualtipán, Hidalgo. Se eligieron dos sitios de una hectárea cada uno. En el primero se aplicó el método de árboles padres (SCM), mientras que el segundo se mantuvo en condición natural (SSM). Para estimar la lluvia de semillas, emergencia y supervivencia de plántulas, así como el número de semillas viables almacenadas en el reservorio del suelo, cada sitio se dividió en 100 cuadros de 10 x 10 m. De manera aleatoria se instalaron 40 trampas circulares de 0.5 m2 cada una, rectángulos de 2m2 y se extrajeron muestras de 3 cm de profundidad en 40 cuadros de 0.5 m2 cada uno para ambos sitios. Marea roja ocasionada por <i>Scripsiella trochoidea</i> en el estuario del río Chone OceanDocs

Se presentan los resultados obtenidos durante un evento de marea roja en el estuario del río Chone y que las variables físicas, químicas, planctónicas y de contenido estomacal. Se considera que la marea roja registrada fue originada por <i>Scripsiella trochoidea</i> y no habría tenido características tóxicas y que la mortalidad de chuhueco <i>Cetengraulis mysticetus</i>, habría sido resultado de los descensos del oxígeno que habría provocado esta proliferación algal.

En febrero de 2003 en la Laguna de Yahuarcocha, se registró la muerte masiva de peces, estimándose que morían aproximadamente 500 peces/m2 por causas no conocidas. Fenómeno que se mantuvo durante algunas semanas disminuyendo paulatinamente el número de muertes. El Instituto Nacional de Pesca realizó un monitoreo durante los días 19 y 20 de marzo, con la finalidad de determinar las posibles causas, para lo cual se analizaron los parámetros ambientales, biológicos, identificación de las especies presentes en la laguna y la histopatología de los órganos y tejidos de los peces afectados. Water quality trends and input loads to Lake Nakuru OceanDocs

Water quality trends of Lake Nakuru, Kenya and its feeder streams were monitored in 2001-2004. Water samples were obtained from eleven stations in the lake and five points on inflowing streams. The items monitored were physico-chemical and biological components. The drainage basin was characterized by recurrence of dry spells throughout the period with water losses in the lake exceeding the amount received to cause a fall in water volume. The lake water salts content rose – conductivity and alkalinity reached 58 ms/cm and 5,200 mg/l respectively. PH was more or less constant (10.00 – 10.36).
